Practice Makes Perfect

As we learn a new language, we need to repeat some words and phrases many times. Sometimes we are able to remember by association and the idea becomes a solid thought immediately, but I have found that I need more times to see the words or hear the words many times before it becomes part of my language. It is also true that we need to repeat that same type of communication in different instances and repeat those phrases often; practice makes perfect. I use the analogy of a soccer player trying to kick the ball into the net in specific locations. The player must try many times for accuracy and from many different angles. There are many times that we will need to use our English in different settings and to become comfortable and confident we need to use our communication in a variety of backgrounds. Practicing our speaking is key to having the ability to use our language when we need it. Perfection, or our idea of perfection in speaking, arrives when we are thinking in English and not reverting back to our native language. Searching for words in our vocabulary is also important. That is why we cannot only focus on our professional language to get us through to advanced English.

To speak we need to speak and to talk we need to talk. So, let’s get going and become advanced speakers of English.
